| About Sifu David Calhoun | |
| My name is David Calhoun. I am the owner and head instructor. I have been studying Kenpo since 1984 and currently hold the rank of 3rd degree black belt. | |
| Prior to studying Kenpo I was active in another martial art. I was instructing regularly, and was competing as a black belt in karate tournaments. I left that art after approximately three years of training for personal and religious reasons. A couple of years later I started looking for another place to practice. I found Kenpo. The first thing that drew me to Kenpo was the family type atmosphere the school promoted. Once enrolled I began to realize that although I had enough martial arts skills to put on a sometimes impressive show, I really had very little knowledge as to the mechanics or the reasons those skills would or would not work in a given situation. |

| The beauty of Kenpo is that not only do you learn how to do a particular technique or move, you learn why that technique will be effective. Basically, in the study of martial arts we need to understand two things; How our bodies work, and how our opponent's bodies don't work. As we learn these mechanics, we can apply that knowledge in self defense situations. In Kenpo we don't meditate or try to summon up supernatural powers, we teach proper body mechanics coupled with the natural laws of physics, which, when combined, produce smart, effective self-defense solutions. | |

Our lineage in the art descends from Mr. Edmund
K. Parker, through 10th Degree Black Belt Richard "Huk" Planas, and now through myself.
I earned my 2nd Degree Black Belt while studying under 5th Degree Black
Belt Alfred David Perez, and 4th Degree Black Belt Arnulfo "J.R."
Diaz. I have now become a first generation student of Mr. Richard Planas.
Our goal is to teach the Kenpo system as it was originally intended
to be taught. Kenpo was
designed to allow for innumerable variations, but only after the base
system has been learned. I
love teaching Kenpo, and my hope is I will honor the art with sound,
challenging instruction. |
At the Karate School, we are very family oriented, and provide instruction for students of all ages and levels of proficiency. I hope you will join our family here at The Karate School. Visitors are always welcome, so feel free to stop by and watch a class or two. We hope to see you soon! |
